ferraro, hillary’s stooge

It’s been a bad week for New York Democrats. Eliot Spitzer is about to resign after admitting to being a client of a prostitution ring, just like the one he broke up on his way to the governor’s mansion. Hillary Clinton has lost two more primaries and is now farther behind in the pledged delegate count than she was before her big wins in Texas and Ohio. Worst of all, Geraldine Ferraro, who made history as the first woman on a presidential ticket, managed to decry sexism and practice racism all at once.

Last Friday, Ferraro stated - flat out - that Barack Obama is only leading the Democratic race because he is black. (Because being black has always been so helpful in electoral politics!) After widespread criticism, she didn’t take it back. Instead, she added defiantly, “I really think they’re attacking me because I’m white. How’s that?”

Did Hillary denounce her? No. (Though, for the record she found such comments by one of her top supporters, “regrettable.”) Did she reject her support? Of course not.

Why would she? Ferraro’s comments are directly in line with attempts by Hillary’s campaign to highlight Obama’s race and her gender. Cynicism aside, they believe it will be a winning strategy. While on one hand they claim that society places women at a great disadvantage, on the other hand they hold her gender as the ultimate trump card; they know that crying sexism can win votes in America while crying racism cannot.

Imagine the effects on his campaign if Barack Obama ran an ad featuring all African-Americans. Imagine the effects if he spoke in a debate about the chance to make history by electing a black man president. Imagine if he pointed regularly to racism in the media. He would have no chance of being elected.

Meanwhile, Hillary ran an ad featuring all women in Texas. Hillary talked in the last debate about people’s chance to make history by electing a woman - as does her web site. Hillary’s people have repeatedly complained about sexism in the media. It is now ironic that Geraldine Ferraro claims that Barack Obama would not be where he is if he were a woman.

Essentially, Geraldine and Hillary are having trouble accepting reality: Americans like this black man more than that woman.

With six more weeks to go before the Pennsylvania primary, there is no telling how low Hillary Clinton, her campaign and her surrogates will go. We have already arrived to the point where reports about her campaign darkening Barack Obama’s skin in an ad aren’t really that incredible.

She is a monster. She will stoop to anything. Unfortunately, so will Geraldine.
