edwards: broke bloke with no hope

When I woke up this morning and read Lawrence O’Donnell’s newest hit piece on The Huffington Post, “John Edwards Is A Loser,” I thought it was a little much. Full of gems like, “John Edwards is a loser. He has won exactly two elections in his life and lost 31,” and “A loser like Edwards has no status or dignity to lose. Campaigning and losing is his life.” The piece makes a startlingly unsubtle argument for Edwards to drop out now.
Two hours later I received a mass e-mail from the Edward’s campaign. It’s from the “campaign manager” David Bonior and the subject line reads:
“Bumper stickers, T-shirts and campaign buttons!”
Oh my, is this campaign in trouble! In what looks like a desperate attempt to raise some quick cash, they have actually begun to aggressively hawk their merchandise. (Note to Edward’s staffers: things get really bad when they start to sell office equipment right out from under you.)
Edwards has only raised $2 million since Iowa, compare that to Obama’s $8 million plus and the $20 million cash on hand that the Clinton campaign reportedly has. Edwards was the only candidate to accept federal matching funds and is so broke that he’s already borrowing against them. The AP reports; “The money is not available until March, but the campaign has already started borrowing, using the match as collateral.”
Sen. Edwards, you’ve been a good candidate and you’ve brought poverty and the shrinking middle class into our national debate. We all thank you for that. But you’re broke and you’re not going to win any states. Shoot, you’re even polling third in North Carolina, your home state!
Worse than all that, you’re holding back a portion of the progressives in the Democratic Party from voting for an electable change candidate. This is your moment to drop out and endorse Obama, don’t be a spoiler for the left, the stakes are too high.
