The whole proposal to rename the bailout a “rescue” is actually preposterous, and a cheap, depressing effort to use language as a tool to rebrand government intervention as a noble cause. It’s just putting lipstick on a pig. There, I said it.
Why has McCain abandoned his tactics of 2000 for those of Karl Rove and Lee Atwater? The easy answer is that McCain is not honor, honesty and straight-talk incarnate but just a typical politician. There’s a more complex answer, though, and I submit that it holds more weight.
The Bush Administration is spending phantom dollars in order to get short-term gains. It is the mortgage crisis on a gargantuan scale. It is the largest act of hypocritical scolding ever witnessed by the American people.
We allow the parties to co-opt us and make us vote against our nation’s interests. If you are a professor in Boston, you better be a Democrat. A salesman in Summerville, South Carolina? You’d better not betray the sticker on your truck and the voice on your favorite radio station.
Like many Americans, I am dissatisfied with our elected leaders. They are more concerned with their next election than with actually doing the business of the people. I propose a solution this November: vote against the incumbents.
After seeing the culmination of both parties’ best efforts to introduce their candidates to their delegations and the nation, my mind kept returning to one thought: if this election comes down to field operations, the Republicans will beat the Democrats.
With her credentials as an anti-abortionist, family woman and Republican who bucked corrupt members of her party in Alaskan politics, Gov. Sarah Palin has revitalized social conservatives for a running mate who made the most vocal of them cringe.
In the wake of the Republican National Convention, lots of people have been talking about the candidates, the speeches and the excitement. But outside the convention halls and beyond the narrow scope of the mainstream camera lenses, more troubling events of an equally historic nature were taking place.
