praise be to bush

by Josh Sarpen

Published: May 6, 2008

Many of my Democratic counterparts (as well as the news media) have spent the past seven and a half years focusing on President Bush’s shortcomings. I would like to offer counterpoint to the members of my party, and acknowledge President Bush’s greatest triumphs in office.

Expanding daylight savings time. At first I thought this change was going to be a negative, since it meant that calendars were now inaccurate in their labeling of the event, and I feared it would mean I would be an hour late for all of my work meetings. However, I was wrong (and not afraid to admit it). Making the days longer earlier in the year helped curb my seasonal affective disorder, and the early sunlight convinced me to get up and go to the gym. Thanks!

Ignoring the signs of global warming. If he hadn’t done it, Al Gore wouldn’t have been able to win a Nobel Peace Prize. Also, future generations of Americans will be able to save money not buying items like parkas, down comforters, skis, etc. Also, I was able to bike in New York this year in February… twice. I expect that the same will be true next year, and the year after that. I appreciate that I can enjoy my passion more months of the year.

Allowing people to switch cell phone carriers and keep their number. This may be the most beneficial achievement of any in his eight-year reign. I switched from Cingular to Verizon two years ago to get a good-looking phone with almost no practicality to the device. I was able to keep the same 717 area code number I have had for 10 years. This allows me to keep hope that people I dated six or seven years ago can still call and apologize for what they did wrong. After all, they still know where to reach me.

So, for a moment, forget about the unending turmoil in Iraq, our worthless currency, struggling economy and deteriorating environment. Our commander in chief was busy achieving the feats that are listed above. And anyone who is in the early stages of research regarding a book on the Bush legacy can consult this article for inspiration.

    Bush has done the following:

    1. Banned Partial Birth Abortion

    2. By Executive Order (EO), reversed Clinton’s policy of not requiring parental consent for abortions under the Medical Privacy Act.

    3. Upheld the ban on abortions at military hospitals.

    4. Made $33 million available for abstinence education programs in 2004.

    5. Supports the DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE ACT— and a Constitutional amendment saying marriage is between one MAN and one WOMAN.
(OK Anti-Gay Marriage Supporters, heres your claim)

    6. Requires districts to let students transfer out of dangerous schools.

    7. Signed two income tax cuts, one of which was the largest dollar-value tax cut in world history.

    8. Fight Europe’s ban on importing biotech crops from the United States.

    9. Provided $20 million to states to help people with disabilities work from home.

    10. Created a fund to encourage technologies that help the disabled.
(Who says his money is going to waste?)

11.Changed the tone in the White House, restoring HONOR and DIGNITY to the presidency.

    12. Has reintroduced the mention of God and faith into public discourse.

    13. Handled himself with enormous courage, dignity, grace, determination, and leadership in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 hijackings and anthrax attacks.

    14. Is working to provide vouchers to low-income students in persistently failing schools to help with costs of attending private schools

    15. Submitted a comprehensive Energy Plan (awaits Congressional action). The plan works to develop cleaner technology, produce more natural gas here at home, make America less dependent on foreign sources of energy, improve national grid, etc.
(Here’s your reson environmentalists: Be angry at CONGRESS!)

    16. Established a $10 million grant program to promote private conservation initiatives.

    17. Significantly eased field-testing controls of genetically engineered crops.

    18. Changed parts of the Forestry Management Act to allow necessary cleanup of the national forests in order to reduce fire danger.

    19. Provided matching grants for state programs that help private landowners protect rare species.

    20. Successfully executed two wars in the aftermath of 9/11/01: Afghanistan and Iraq. 50 million people who had lived under tyrannical regimes now live in freedom.

    21. Saddam Hussein is now DEAD. His two murderous sons are dead. All but a handful of the regime’s senior members were killed or captured.

    22. Disarmed Libya of its chemical, nuclear and biological WMD’s without bribes or bloodshed.

    23. Has been one of the strongest, if not THE strongest friend Israel has ever hand in the U.S. presidency

    24. Part of the coalition for an Israeli/Palestinian “Roadmap to Peace,” along with Great Britain, Russia and the EU.

    25. Pushed through THREE raises for our military. Increased military pay by more than $1 billion a year.
(He SURE is harming our troops…NOT)

    26. Signed the LARGEST nuclear arms reduction in world history with Russia.

    27. Challenged the United Nations to live up to their responsibilities and not become another League of Nations (in other words, showed the UN to be completely irrelevant).

    28. Improved government efficiency by putting hundreds of thousands of jobs put up for bid. This weakens public-sector unions and cuts undeserved pay raises.

    29. Strengthen the National Health Service Corps to put more physicians in the neediest areas, and make its scholarship funds tax-free.

    30. Double the research budget of the National Institutes of Health.

    31. The Border Patrol is continuing installation of monitoring devices along the borders to detect illegal activity.

    32. Split the Immigration and Naturalization Service into two agencies: one to protect the border and interior, the other to deal with naturalization.

    33. Is nominating strong, conservative judges to the judiciary.

    34. Supports class action reform bill which limits lawyer fees so that more settlement money goes to victims.

    35. His leadership does not control the House and Senate, making their desicisons separate and NOT led by the president.

    36. Ordered Attorney General Ashcroft to formally notify the Supreme Court that the OFFICIAL U.S. government position on the 2nd Amendment is that it supports INDIVIDUAL rights to own firearms, and is NOT a Leftist-imagined “collective” right

    37. Established the The White House Office and the Centers for the Faith-Based and Community Initiative — located in seven Federal agencies. The faith-based initiative supports the essential work of these important organizations. The goal is to make sure that grassroots leaders can compete on an equal footing for federal dollars, receive greater private support, and face fewer bureaucratic barriers. Work focuses on at-risk youth, ex-offenders, the homeless and hungry, substance abusers, those with HIV/AIDS, and welfare-to-work families.
