WMD’s in iraq and other things we’re not allowed to talk about

Six and a half years ago America was viciously attacked by a band of extremist terrorists who hijacked four passenger planes and flew them into buildings symbolic of America’s power, core and vitality: the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The third target would have been in Washington, either the White House or the Capitol building, but that plan was thwarted by an act of true heroism as the very first American counterattack in the War on Terror came to life.

Our enemies were quickly identified as Al-Qaeda, a multinational network of extreme Islamofascists who would not stop at even the idea of their own suicide to destroy America. Think about that. Envision it right now, the possibility that you could hate somebody so much that you would kill yourself to kill them. Imagine that being someone you don’t even know. How bent would you have to be?

We hunted them down and traced them to Afghanistan, where we gave them the pounding of their lives. Their leader, Osama bin Laden, is either dead or not coming out of hiding at all, except to release a few poor-quality grainy cassette tapes of himself mumbling threats against America through a kazoo - threats sounding dangerously similar to Democrat talking points… but I digress.

American intelligence linked Al-Qaeda to Iraq when former captain Sabah Khodada revealed the inner workings of a terrorist training camp at Salman Pak: one where Iraqis as well as other Arabs learned how to make bombs and hijack American aircraft. More actionable intelligence was gathered and the case was quickly made - even the UN found Iraq in violation of WMD sanctions as well as other rules. The UN! Hans Blix, the guy who couldn’t understand why the Iraqis wouldn’t let him inspect certain storage facilities until they’d had a chance to move everything inside, found legitimate cause to forcibly remove Saddam Hussein from power.

A coalition of more than thirty nations was formed, including the US, the UK, Spain, Italy, the UAE, Australia and others. The newest campaign against terror began, this time in Iraq.

The unsettling thing was that a few people didn’t see the connection, many of which were elected officials within the US government. The mainstream media cranked its spin machine up to full speed in order to echo that mentality. In spite of the original predictions by liberal Democrats that the coalition forces would be handily defeated, we mowed through the entire country’s defenses in three weeks. From the moment our tanks touch Iraqi soil, less than a month passed before Saddam’s statue was pulled to the ground and the once-oppressed Iraqi people crowded the streets to shout with joy that the reign of terror was finally over.

That forced the spin machine to shift gears without a clutch, and it hastily grabbed onto the idea that there was no terrorist connection between Iraq and Al-Qaeda to begin with. It also insisted that there were no WMD in Iraq, despite all the materials found in violation of the aforementioned 1441 - remember, a UN statute, not just US. The violations included a number of illegal rocket motors, mobile chemical laboratories capable of producing biological weaponry that had coincidentally been cleaned with bleach, high levels of chemical toxins dumped in the Euphrates river and reliable intelligence reports labeling dump sites for chemical weaponry in the desert. In the summer of 2006, more information was declassified on this topic confirming that WMD were in fact in Iraq. The spin machine kept running, though, and refused to report the story. All they cared about was hyping up soldier deaths and defaming the war, insisting that President Bush was trashing the nation’s image worldwide.

Five years later, terrorism is still alive in Iraq, but dissipating quickly thanks to the efforts of the noble General David Petraeus and the success of the troop surge. Al-Qaeda is so desperate for suicide bombers that they’ve resorted to using women, children and even the handicapped to carry out their missions, yet all the spin machine has to say about it is that three thousand American soldiers have died in the past five years in Iraq. You never hear them say that over thirteen thousand soldiers died under the previous administration, while only nine thousand have died under the current one; again, all they can do is trash the efforts of the military and compare the Iraq campaign to Vietnam.

Truth be told, the Iraq campaign is more like the War of 1812, which was called ‘Mr. Madison’s War’ by the opponents, even though the nation as we know it would have ended had we lost. Today, the opposition calls Iraq ‘Mr. Bush’s War’, but mark my words, the day will come when they wish they had been a part of it, that they had supported the security of America by supporting the campaign against terrorism in Iraq.

So don’t be fooled by the machine; take a look at history, which has an unfortunate habit of supporting the truth one hundred percent of the time. We went in for the right reasons, those reasons were confirmed, and we’re still there because we are America and we finish what we start. We owe it to ourselves, we owe it to the coalition, and we especially owe it to the brave souls who perished defending America when the first retaliation happened in the air on 9/11.

Facts are stubborn things.
