presidential vices

Every presidential candidate has their vices, whether true or made up by the media. Bill Clinton was a womanizer, Ross Perot was just plain crazy. John Kerry wasn’t a good enough vet, and George W. Bush wasn’t really a vet at all. John McCain sleeps with lobbyists, and Hillary Clinton is Hillary Clinton. These things crop up with every election for voters to sift through, but what I find astonishing are the scandals that people choose to ignore.

Barack Obama has a firm stance on an issue, or so I’ve heard, and he’s an amazing speaker. I weep and wail every time the guy gets his hands on a microphone. But because of these awe-inspiring assets, for some reason people choose to ignore the fact that the man frequently did cocaine in his youth.

In Obama’s book, “Dreams From My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance,” he describes his drug and alcohol use, saying, “Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little blow when you could afford it. Not smack, though.”

Throughout this whole election season I have waited for this to become a bigger issue, but nobody seems to want to touch it. Are we really that enamored with the man?

Has it occurred to anyone that felons can’t be President of the United States? Just because he wasn’t caught and didn’t do jail time doesn’t mean the crime didn’t occur. Maybe the country is so used to shady Democrats that we’re willing to sweep this one under the rug.

Sure we’ve impeached you for lying under oath, but you’re actually very charming … oh, all right, you’re off the hook this time. Boys will be boys, I guess.

What’s that? You drunkenly drove off a bridge and left that young lady to fend for herself? Well, I’m sure she’ll be fine. Why not be our Senator for the next 40 years.

An excuse I heard once was that drugs have become so commonplace that there are few people who haven’t done the same thing. I don’t think this excuse really deserves a response, but don’t we want someone in the White House who had the guts to not follow the crowd?

I guess maybe we all feel a little bit closer to Obama for his inadequacies. In the words of the great Whitney Houston, “Crack is cheap. I make too much money to ever smoke crack.” Obama’s taste for the cheap stuff shows he had financial hardships too.

So Obama used drugs, but barely had the money to buy himself some cheap blow, and he never sprang for the heroin. He really is just like the rest of us. We need a president who understands the hard knock life. A guy who can balance the budget, supply free healthcare for all and spare some crack for the little guy. We need a guy like Obama!
