Senator Barack Obama swaggers toward the political pulpit to deliver yet another victory speech as his background music fades from Aretha Franklin’s Think to the O’Jays’ Give the People What They Want. Some think Obama’s speeches are so lyrical, they’ve been put to music.
After firing another campaign manager, Sen. Hillary Clinton delivers another conciliatory concession to the inspiring music of Celine Dion which some argue is one diva taking a chance on another, but I digress. Thank heaven she has moved past this
Governor Mike Huckabee has a jug band that follows him around wherever he goes, which, unfortunately has yet to be captured on video. This, however, has been.
And John McCain?
Making what can only be assumed to be a well-thought-out plan, Sen. McCain has selected a campaign soundtrack that captures the heart of America: Our Country, by one Mr. John (Cougar) Mellencamp.
When other representatives of the Grand Old Party would have opted for safer songs that evoke the spirit of America, such as Lee Greenwood’s Proud to be an American, the Chevy-sturdy Like a Rock, by Bob Seger or the let’s build the wall anthem Fly with the Eagle by singer-songwriter-bigot Michael Anthony, Mr. McCain brilliantly chose a populist and nearly socialist song that calls for an uprising of the common man: The dream will never leave/ And some day it will come true/ And it’s up to me and you/ To do the best that we can do/ And let the voice of freedom/ Sing out through this land.
And why wouldn’t he?
The song sounds so darn uhMERkin, it’s gotta be about how great our country is, right? So that will draw in everyone that doesn’t listen to actual words and think about any inherent meanings (read: everybody). If McCain chose it, it’s gotta be about those good ol’ conservative values we’ve all come to love over the last few years.
And, well, the few that bother to think through what Mr. Mellencamp is actually saying? They’ll figure that McCain is pandering to the left-leaning independents in an attempt to draw them away from the smooth ride and “Yes We Can” message of the Obama machine.
And, maybe, John McCain is letting his true colors show. Among others, Ann Coulter has repeatedly called McCain a liberal in a conservative’s clothes.
Maybe all that talk of no universal health care, over-turning Roe vs. Wade, building a border-fence, staying in Iraq, invading Iran and cutting taxes for the richest Americans is Mr. McCain’s way of sneaking a socialist agenda into the White House. The guy’s a genius and, Ms. Coulter, you are our ever-vigilant watchdog.
